Westbrook has been fined for directing profanity toward a fan

Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook has been fined $25,000 for directing profanity and threatening language to a fan, the NBA announced on Tuesday.

The Utah Jazz announced a permanent ban of the fan who engaged in the inappropriate interaction with Westbrook from all events at Vivint Smart Home Arena.

The situation has sparked conversation on Tuesday about how unruly fans should be handled at NBA arenas. In a statement, Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell vowed to ban all hate speech and racism in arenas.

The fine for Westbrook was likely a formality given his comments to a fan and his wife on Monday night. After the game, Westbrook defended his response to the derogatory comments made by the fan.

The Jazz said in a statement that they will not tolerate fans who act inappropriately, thus the reason for the permanent ban of the fan in question.
