Westbrook: First player to lead NBA in points, assists multiple times

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook had himself quite a 2018-19 campaign. The former MVP set quite a few records and helped his team to the sixth seed in the NBA Playoffs.

Westbrook averaged 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game for his third consecutive season average a triple-double. He set an NBA record earlier this season for most consecutive triple-doubles with 11.

His 10.7 assists per game led all NBA players this season. Although Westbrook missed nine games, his 784 assists were the most in the league as Trae Young finished second with 653.

This season is the second in which Westbrook led the league in assists (2017-18). As ESPN pointed out, Westbrook is now the only player in NBA history to lead the league twice in scoring (2014-15, 2016-17) and twice in assists.

Westbrook has said in the past that he thoroughly enjoys getting his teammates involved in the game and that certainly showed this season by leading the league in assists.

He also recorded only the second 20-20-20 game in NBA history this season after tallying 20 points, 20 rebounds and 21 assists. Surprisingly, his 21 assists weren’t even a career best (24).

Westbrook certainly had a remarkable 2018-19 season but it might come down to his performance in the playoffs that will dictate if his season was truly a success or not.
