West Yorkshire Police slam 'mindless actions' of man who threw brick off M621 bridge

Police have said it was 'sheer luck' that no-one was seriously injured when a man threw a brick off a bridge over the M621, almost shattering the windscreen of a car travelling at 50mph.

LeedsLive reported how a driver was left badly shaken after the brick hit his car near Junction 5 of the southbound M621 on Wednesday.

Rik Nichol, from Wakefield, said "Luckily cars behind backed off when they saw what happened. It took a of seconds to contemplate what had actually happened, had I completed changing lanes it could well have hit right at my face."

Today West Yorkshire Police slammed the 'mindless actions' of the lone figure spotted on the bridge and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said officers were called just after 7.30pm on Wednesday, September 25 to reports of a lone man on the bridge over the M621 throwing stones onto the carrigeway below.

Police searched the area and dash cam footage, which you can watch above, has been retrieved.

A spokesman said: "Such mindless actions could quite easily have resulted in a scenario with far more serious consequences and it is only by sheer luck that no-one was seriously injured.

“Given the time that this occurred, it is possible that other drivers may have witnessed it occur and captured it on dash-cam.

“We will not accept this type of irresponsible behaviour and would urge anyone with information as to the individual responsible to contact us.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101 or contact the police using the live-chat facility via the Force website. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
