West Virginia (2-1) vs. Kansas (2-1) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

All of a sudden, West Virginia started to work again.

After sputtering against James Madison and getting stuffed by Missouri, the Mountaineers went off on a strong NC State team and started to look it’s supposed to.

The passing game clicked, and the ground game finally was something other than totally awful, averaging over six yards per carry in the night-and-day improved performance.

It’s still going to be a work in progress in the rebuilding season, but it was the performance needed at the right time three games into the Neal Brown era.

Yes, Kansas was amazing against Boston College, and yes, it’s a dangerous-looking team that might really be a whole lot better now under Les Miles, but it’s still just a week removed from losing 12-7 at home to Coastal Carolina.

Why Kansas Will Win

Where did THAT come from?

That wasn’t just some quirky-weird 48-24 win over Boston College. This wasn’t a ten-takeaway game, there weren’t weather problems, and there wasn’t anything else to the victory other than a terrific performance with a balanced offense and a whole lot of explosion.

No, the run defense still wasn’t anything special, but the Jayhawks had two 100-yard runners, Carter Stanley hit 20-of-27 passes, and in all, KU gained 567 yards and took total control of the game after the first quarter.

The overall consistency isn’t there yet, but if this is the Kansas team going forward, it’s going to take a big offensive performance to keep up the pace.

What’s Going To Happen

You think you have these two teams figured out? Yeah … right.

Which West Virginia team will show up? Which Kansas team will get off the bus? What’s more real, the teams that couldn’t do anything right over the first two weeks, or the teams that came up with those out-of-leftfield performances?

West Virginia is a whole lot steadier and more consistent, at least when it comes to the passing game. The Kansas run defense is just okay, but it’s the pass D that’s going to have issues this week.

The Jayhawks aren’t going to be Coastal Carolina-game miserable, but the offense will be held in check just enough for WVU QB Austin Kendall and the O to get out of Lawrence with what’s now a solid win.
