West Virginia (0-0) vs. James Madison (0-0) Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

There’s a whole lot of new parts to the West Virginia mix going up against a JMU team good enough to battle for the FCS playoffs. The Mountaineers are breaking in a new quarterback, a new head coach, a whole slew of new receivers, and a LOT of new starters on the defensive side.

This is a rebuild under new Neal Brown.

Former Pitt QB Ben DiNucci is back after a decent season, the Dukes have plenty of other good parts to the offense returning, but it’s the defense that’s the killer. Led by LB Dimitri Holloway, most of the top tacklers are back, the run defense is going to be a rock, and the solid secondary won’t give up a slew of big plays. But …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Relax … it’s going to be fine.

Former Oklahoma Sooner Austin Kendall is going to put up massive numbers this season, the receiving corps is loaded with speed – if not a whole lot of experience – and even though it’s going against a great D, the running game should be good enough to get by.

The Mountaineers should be able to grind it out a bit. JMU didn’t do much in the time of possession battle last season, and under Brown, WVU controlling the clock early on is a must. The Mountaineer O line will be an early strength – at least in terms of experience – and it has to take advantage.

What’s Going To Happen

James Madison really is that good. It’ll be a fight for Brown’s team considering how solid and strong the FCSer is, but Kendall and the offense will be efficient enough to survive in a battle well into the second half. There’s enough talent and athleticism on the WVU D to be okay.
