WASHINGTON _ West Virginia teachers have reached a deal with Gov. Jim Justice to end a strike that shut down all of the state's public schools for four days, according to the American Federation of Teachers.
Under the agreement, teachers will receive 5 percent raises over a year, and a task force will be created to fix issues with the Public Employees Insurance Agency. Union officials have argued that the state's teacher pay, among the lowest in the U.S., spurs employees to leave for better offers across state lines or to take on second jobs.
"Yesterday like I said I went around, I got beat on a good little bit, but at the same time that doesn't matter much to me _ I'm always trying to listen," Justice, a Republican, said at a news conference Tuesday evening.
