West of Scotland League set for crunch SFA meeting over lockdown measures

Officials from the West of Scotland League will hold crunch talks with the Scottish FA this afternoon amid fears their kick-off could be delayed further.

Friendlies have been lined up in the coming weeks and the league was pencilled in for an October 24 kick-off, but a Scottish Government announcement yesterday has cast major doubt over the games going ahead and the divisions starting this month.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon unveiled a host of mini-lockdown measures to stave off a second wave of Covid-19 cases, particularly across the Central Belt.

The measures include a shutdown of all amateur contact sports, indoor and outdoor, between October 9 and October 25.

Professional sport is unaffected and while the Lowland League has been given the green light to go-ahead as scheduled on Saturday, the West of Scotland League remains in the dark over how the measures will impact their plans.

However, league officials will hold a meeting with SFA chiefs over Zoom at 1pm today to discover the way forward.

If the ban is enforced at WOSL level, it will throw the big kick-off into further chaos, with the planned October 10 start date already pushed back, in the hope of fans being allowed to return to stadiums.

However, a fan return seems a long way off given the current circumstances and all 67 clubs across the WOSL divisions will eagerly await an update from the league in due course.
