Mick McCann says appointing Craig Pettigrew as captain was an easy call – now revitalised Glenafton are chasing five wins on the spin, writes Mike Wilson.
The New Cumnock men can climb into the WoSFL Premier Division’s top half if they beat Cumbernauld at home on Saturday.
The hot run is in stark contrast to a dismal start to the season when Glens went seven games without a win after beating Irvine Meadow on the opening day.
But first season boss McCann reckons there were reasons for the horror start that plunged them into the relegation mix.
He claimed: “Only four or five of the boys had played together before and the Saturday-Wednesday programme was very tough.
“I’m getting to know the boys better and similarly they now know the management team so we are starting to see improvements across the board.
“We have momentum which we want to keep going so we now look at Saturday’s game as the most important of the season.”
McCann showers praise on Pettigrew who returned to Loch Park for a second stint after spending last term at St Cadoc’s when Glens sat the season out.
He revealed: “Craig is one of my best mates.
“Getting him back to the club was massive as he is a great player who sets an example on the pitch.

“Craig is a born leader who captained Junior Scotland so it was an easy decision to straight away make him our skipper.”
Pettigrew, 34, joined Ayr United from Lugar as a youngster and had spells with Stranraer and Dumbarton as well as winning every Junior honour with Auchinleck and Kilwinning.
Glens made it four in a row when they beat Rossvale 2-1 thanks to a third minute strike from Sam McKee and a late winner from Jordan Ryan.
McCann admitted: “It became a physical battle and we stopped passing the ball after a good start. It wasn’t one of our best performances but I’ll take the points.”
