West of England to get £300m to fix roads, bridges and two million potholes

The government has pledged £300million to improve roads and infrastructure in the West of England.

The money is part of a £1.7billion Transport Infrastructure Investment Fund that will be used to carry out work including filling in two million potholes in the region.

It will also be used to repair bridges, install priority bus lanes and create projects to boost air quality.

Roads minister Baroness Vere said: “It is vital that we continue to stay at home and only travel when it is essential to do so, but as people slowly begin to return to our roads over the coming weeks and months, we want to ensure they are in the best shape possible.

“The funding we are allocating will help make journeys smoother, quicker and safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

The £1.7billion is being allocated based on the length of local authorities’ roads, according to the government.

During lockdown a number of South West local authorities have been carrying out works, including Devon County Council, which has been repairing a Grade II listed bridge in Buckfastleigh.

Austin’s Bridge dates from 1749 and was closed as a safety precaution in February due to damage from Storm Dennis.

The news follows an announcement by transport secretary Grant Schapps last week for a £2billion fund to boost sustainable travel and encourage more people to begin cycling and walking.

Before the UK's lockdown in March, chancellor Rishi Sunak made a number of transport and infrastructure announcements for the South West in his first budget speech.

He acknowledged the region's A303 road was one of the UK's "most important regional arteries" and had needed fixing since the 1980s.

He announced plans to fix the road and also improve the A417, which runs through Cirencester and Gloucester.
