West Lothian youngster William Borland defeats three time World Champion Michael van Gerwen in Players Championship event

A 24-year-old from East Calder has scored the biggest win of his young darts career after knocking out three-time world champion and current world number three Michael van Gerwen.

William Borland breezed past the Dutch ace 6-2 in the last-64 of yesterday's Players Championship 10 event in Germany.

The pair were tied at 2-2 before a scintillating performance from Borland proved far too strong for his opponent. The youngster rattled off legs of 14, 13, 13 and 10 to secure a famous 6-2 triumph over one of the best players to ever play the sport.

Borland, who made the quarter-finals of the World Youth Championships two years ago, averaged a brilliant 104.09 in the victory.

Ranked 80th in the world, he trounced 19th ranked Simon Whitlock 6-1 in the first round before meeting van Gerwen.

Borland would defeat Vincent van der Meer in the third round, 6-4, before suffering a 6-5 defeat in the last-16 at the hands of Aaron Beeney.
