West Lothian youngster claims major scalp at Hungarian Darts Trophy

West Lothian darts ace William Borland claimed a major scalp in the Hungarian Darts Trophy before having to withdraw as he was set to face Livingston-born Peter Wright in the last-16.

Borland (24) defeated 14th seed Mensur Suljovic in a dramatic final leg second round battle, claiming a 6-5 win having earlier defeated Sweden’s Johan Engstrom 6-4 in the first round.

Unfortunately, Borland withdrew for personal reasons which saw Wright receive a bye to the quarter-final, where he lost 6-2 to Michael Smith.

Borland has enjoyed a fine season as the East Calder man looks to continue his climb up the world rankings and earlier this year claimed the scalp of three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen at the Players Championship event in Germany.

Meanwhile, 2020 world champion Wright had been confirmed as a member of the Scotland team set to compete in the World Cup which gets underway on Thursday.

The 2019 champion returns to the team having missed last year. He will be teamed up with John Henderson.

Scotland are seeded sixth and face China in the first round. Should they progress, they will then take on the winner of the match between Czech Republic and Poland.
