West Lothian world record breaking cyclist revisits his round the world challenge

Livingston world record cyclist Josh Quigley is set to complete his round the world trip – two years after a life-threatening crash brought it to a halt.

After cycling an incredible 14,500 miles around the world in 2019, he was struck by a car travelling at 70mph in Texas and was hospitalised for five weeks.

He had been on the penultimate leg of his trip but sustained a fractured pelvis and skull as well as several broken ribs and a punctured lung in the accident.

Since then, Josh has recovered well and broke the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance cycled in one week earlier this year after riding 2179 miles on a course around Aberdeenshire.

Now that travel to the USA is permitted, he will fly back to Texas and cycle 1800 miles to New York after which he will fly to Portugal and ride the final 2000 miles back to Edinburgh – travelling from Lisbon, through Spain and France before aiming to finish at Edinburgh Castle on Christmas Eve and complete the challenge he first set himself five years ago to overcome mental health issues.

To complete the challenge, Josh will get back underway on December 3 and is aiming to cycle around 200 miles per day.

Once arriving in Texas, he will visit the hospital and rehab centre to meet and thank the medical teams who looked after him and helped with his rehabilitation following the crash.

Throughout the last year, Josh has also helped raise over £30,000 for charities and good causes and will be using this last push of his round the world challenge to raise funds for Feeding Communities, a charity which aims to provide healthy and nutritious meals for vulnerable people.

Josh and his supporters already raised £15,000 for the charity in September during his world record attempt.
