West Lothian woman celebrates with family and friends as she turns 109

A West Lothian woman reached an amazing milestone when she celebrated her 109th birthday this week.

Janet Mackay enjoyed tea and cakes with staff at Broxburn Care Home on Tuesday morning and was presented with flowers and a birthday cake.

Kirsty McDonald of the care home said: “She’s been having a lovely morning. She was smiling and happy, sitting with staff and having a blether.”

In the afternoon Janet was joined by her youngest son Donald and his wife Louise, as well as Louise’s brother William Brown and his partner Jim.

Donald said: “My father was pretty active and she was like his shadow.

“He was the president of the Scottish Burma Star Association after serving out there during the war and he was also the president of the Clan MacKay society.

“My mother helped him out a lot with both of these tasks.”

Originally from a farming family, Janet moved around a lot when she was younger.

It was while living in Dalmahoy that she met and married her husband Alistair in 1935, giving birth to her eldest son Sandy one year later.

The young family quickly moved to Carrick Knowe and then to West Lothian.

Janet worked as a nanny before World War Two and as an insurance agent for its duration.

She moved to Broxburn Nursing Home in 2013 to be closer to Donald.

Janet has three grandchildren, two of whom moved to Australia, and seven grandchildren.
