West Lothian vet warns about AHDS dog virus sweeping the country – the signs to look out for

A West Lothian veterinary clinic has been warning about the spread of a life-threatening vomiting and diarrhoea virus affecting dogs.

The Acute Haemorrhagic Diarrhoea Syndrome (AHDS) is believed to be caused by a nasty bacteria which targets the gut – and Westport Veterinary Clinic in Linlithgow fear it's "spreading across the UK".

They are warning pet owners to stay vigilant and look out for any signs that their dog could be affected.

The symptoms include diarrhoea containing blood and gut lining, and this can look like strawberry jam, and vomit which may contain blood.

Other signs include a reduced apetite, low energy, pale gums and a sore tummy – so they may yelp when being picked up, or spend time standing in a "prayer position" with front legs on the floor and hind legs up.

A post on Veterinary Partner by specialist Wendy Brooks says: "Acute hemorrhagic diarrhoea syndrome is a potentially life-threatening intestinal condition of an otherwise healthy dog, which manifests as sudden onset bloody, watery diarrhea. The symptoms are extremely dehydrating, often much more than might be expected from the amount of diarrhea, and if it is not promptly treated, the dog can go into shock and can die."

It can affect any breed, age or gender of dog, although is believed to be more common in small dogs such as miniature poodles, Yorkshire Terriers and miniature Schnauzers.

Dogs who pick up the virus can see their condition worsen rapidly, so immediate vet attention is required. Most dogs make a full recovery if they are seen quickly enough.

Westport took to social media to say anyone concerned can contact themselves on 01506 844165.

Edinburgh Live reported last week how deadly dog disease , with a map showing outbreaks to the west and south of the city.
