West Lothian town to be patrolled by police on horses after 'demand' from locals

A West Lothian down will be patrolled by police on horses this weekend after demand from local people.

Officers say police horse patrols will take place in Bathgate on Sunday, May 9. They insist this will allow them to engage safely with residents while Covid-19 social distancing restrictions are still in place.

People in the town are said to have been calling for the horses to make a return after other similar patrols were carried out in recent weeks.

In a widely-shared social media post, West Lothian Police said: "On Sunday our mounted section will be out in Bathgate town centre carrying out community engagement patrols. The horses have proved hugely popular after recent visits and are a great way for residents to engage with us safely whilst Covid regulations are still very much in place. They provide a natural 2m distancing whilst affording the opportunity to get up close to the horses and their riders.

"I would urge everyone to speak to them and in particular introduce your kids to them. One of the horses attending is in training so would appreciate the attention."

Police add they "will be looking to add the horses as part of our ongoing reassurance and engagement patrols across West Lothian".

People very much appear to approve of the decision to use the horses.

John Watson commented: "Excellent. I love seeing the horses being used locally."

Shone Hunter posted: "Only seen the horses once in the Deans area and all the weans loved them. Even the officers were great letting them pet them, and sneaking a wee bit of carrot and cubes."

Elizabeth Easton Robertson added: "Can they come to Mid Street, Bathgate. Sure the elderly would love to see the horses, and me too of course."
