West Lothian teenager to skydive from aeroplane for childhood cancer charity

A West Lothian teenager will jump out of an aeroplane this month to raise money for childhood cancer.

Brave Kieran Hopkins, aged 19, from Blackburn decided on the skydiving idea when his work were looking for ideas to raise money for their charity partners.

Kieran works at Morrisons in Bathgate and the supermarket giant have had a national charity partnership with Clic Sargent - the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families - for the past four years.

He isn’t too daunted by the daring challenge and is currently busy raising as much money as he can ahead of the skydive on September 26.

Kieran explained: “At work they were looking for sponsorship ideas to raise money for Clic Sargent and I just came up with this idea for the skydive.

“I am looking forward to it and I wouldn’t say I am scared because I have no fear of heights but with never having done anything like this before there is always the uncertainty.

“I have done some charity work before when we had a sportathon at school but nothing on this scale.

“I just want to get the word out there and to try and raise as much as I can. People can use the online link or there are charity buckets down at the Morrisons Bathgate store.”

Kieran is a former school captain at Bathgate Academy and alongside his peers manager to raise £3750 with their sportathon for West Lothian Riding for the Disabled and the school’s Polar Academy trip.

Added to that the youngster is also a Police Scotland Youth Volunteer and in 2019 was awarded the East of Scotland Region and National Youth Volunteer of the Year accolade after completing over 200 hours of voluntary work in a year.
