West Lothian teen in finals of Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards

A teenager from West Lothian has been announced as a finalist in this year’s Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards in recognition of their incredible achievements.

Ruth Williams (16) is a finalist in the Enhancing Education category.

The teenager has been volunteering with Carers Trust Scotland since 2020 and actively seeks out opportunities to advocate for young carers at both a local and national level.

In October 2021, Ruth demonstrated strong community leadership by organising a Young Carer Awareness presentation in her school, identifying the current issues, and working with staff to make a change.

Ruth is also an active member of many organisations, including Rights Right Now and Young Adult Carer Advisory Group and has engaged with Scottish Government officials on several important issues.

Through her hard work and commitment, Ruth’s actions in raising awareness and calling for greater support have improved the lives and experiences of young carers in Scotland.

Ruth impressed an esteemed panel of judges with her outstanding contributions to her community The Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards aims to recognise and inspire extraordinary young people from across the country who are making a real difference to the lives of others.

Now in its 16th year, the awards highlight the triumphs of young people in a range of categories - from sport and the environment to enterprise and volunteering – and shine a light on the invaluable contributions made by remarkable young people across Scotland.

The results will be announced on April 27 at a star-studded red-carpet awards ceremony hosted at Edinburgh’s International Conference Centre.

The winners will join a prestigious roll call of previous recipients including RuPaul’s Drag Race champion Lawrence Chaney and social media star Jamie Genevieve. Charitable duo Jack Mullen and Alfie King were crowned 2021’s ‘Young Scots of the Year’ for their work raising donations and keeping community spirit alive during the pandemic.

Kirsten Urquhart, chief executive (Interim) at Young Scot, said: “The inspiring work of Ruth is testament to what the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards are all about – recognising, championing and celebrating the achievements of Scotland’s young people. Congratulations to all of the 2022 finalists.”
