Local primary school children have been experimenting with science at West Lothian College
An excited group of Primary 4/3 pupils from Longridge Primary School visited the college recently to add to the knowledge they have been developing at school on biodiversity, healthy eating and the reactions that change food to fuel with practical scientific experiences.
The college’s science students and lecturers led a range of activities and experiments across the day.
Experiments included testing the impact of sugar on teeth, recording resting heart rates and blood oxygen levels, and learning about energy release from food using a custard bomb.
The pupils enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about STEM subjects and undertake science experiments with expert guidance from the college’s staff and students, with each of them leaving more informed about the various opportunities for work and study in STEM subjects.
Alister Charnley, centre head for health, social care, social science and science said: “As a college we are continually working with local schools and community groups to raise the profile of STEM related subjects and careers on offer within these areas.
“This was a great opportunity for primary aged children to get experience of science experiments and further their passion and knowledge of STEM subjects.”
