West Lothian school kids help less fortunate youngsters with Sport Relief fundraiser

Pupils at a West Lothian primary school have been helping Sport Relief make life better for other youngsters.

The students at Livingston Village Primary School have taken on a Sport Relief Lap of Hope fun run to help raise money to change lives for the better.

The sponsored run sees pupils come together to complete a lap of their playground, classroom or local community to help raise vital funds for Sport Relief, as part of its official charity partnership with Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, alongside United By 2022 and the Commonwealth Sport Foundation.

During the Lap of Hope, pupils are also invited to write and wear a special message, called a Power Pledge which is based on the pupils’ hopes and dreams for the future, and the positive change in the world that they want to see.

Within their classes, pupils from Livingston Village Primary School took part in fun runs around a route of the local area.

Willed on by local residents, pupils’ Power Pledges included a range of issues from reducing plastic waste, ending poverty, improving women’s rights, and having peace throughout the world. There was even chance to stop off at a refreshment station to enjoy orange wedges, giving the pupils the extra energy needed to finish their lap.

Mrs Lesley Fraser, principal teacher at Livingston Primary School, said: “We’re so proud of all of our pupils for taking on the Sport Relief Lap of Hope.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity to join in the fun and celebration of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and help inspire our children to think about the future they’d like to see.

“As the next generation that can make a difference, that’s so important. It was wonderful to see such a wide range of Power Pledges on show and to understand more about issues they’re passionate about, all whilst raising money for Sport Relief.”

Samir Patel, CEO, Comic Relief said: “We’re always blown away by the support we receive from schools to raise money to help people in the UK and internationally. As our leaders of tomorrow, it’s vital that we encourage young people to think about and take part in the social change they would like to see in the world. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the teachers, pupils and parents at Livingston Village Primary School who took part in and made the Lap of Hope possible – your support is helping change lives.”

Money raised by Sport Relief this summer will help tackle inequality, improve mental health, and help young people to survive and thrive in Birmingham, across the UK, around the Commonwealth and beyond.
