West Lothian school is on Oor Wullie's bucket list

A’body’s favourite scallywag has been entertaining children at schools in West Lothian and beyond.

Children at 50 schools around Scotland received an Oor Wullie sculpture to decorate.

These will be given to Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity to be photographed and added to a trail map.

Youngsters at Livingston Village Primary School took part and have been showing off their artwork.

Acting principal teacher Lorna Clyne said: “We wanted as many children as possible to be involved in contributing to the design of our sculpture and in choosing his name.

“We decided to have each child write their own comic strip about Oor Wullie and his adven-tures. Two strips from each class were chosen and used to decoupage his dungarees.

“Whilst reading about Oor Wullie we have developed our understanding of Scots language and some of our favourite words and phrases have been used to decorate his infamous pail. We then had a whole school vote to choose his name from the two nominations of Comic Wullie or Clachan Wullie.

“Clachan Wullie was the preferred option because clachan is the Scots word for village.

“Our reading champions and several children identified for their artistic talents were chosen to help me decorate Clachan Wullie.”

The national trail partners are The Archie Foundation, Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Wild In Art and DC Thomson Media.

One hundred and fifty statues, decorated by artists, community groups and children, will be sponsored to raise money for the charities.

When the trail ends the sculptures will all be exhibited for two days in one venue and then auctioned to raise more cash.
