West Lothian residents may soon be able to travel beyond local council area as Nicola Sturgeon considers lifting restrictions

Nicola Sturgeon may soon loosen travel restrictions so people in West Lothian can visit loved ones throughout Lothian.

Currently people in West Lothian and the rest of Scotland are restricted to travelling within their own council region.

However, if the rules are changed it would allow people in West Lothian to travel between Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian.

At the Holyrood Covid-19 committee meeting yesterday the First Minister said that she hopes to loosen restrictions more over the coming weeks, before lockdown ends on April 26.

She said she was optimistic that this week’s easing of restrictions is just the beginning and that they could ease travel rules, including “moving to health board boundaries” to give people a little bit more freedom.

The first round of the easing of lockdown restrictions begin today (March 11).

Rules on meeting people outdoors will change for both adults and teenagers.

Four adults from two households will be able to meet outside in a private garden, park or other public place under the new rules.

Groups of up to four teens, aged between 12 and 17, from four different households will also be allowed to meet outdoors for recreation or exercise. People are only allow inside the property of a different household for purposes such as using the toilet or entering into a back garden

And adults will be able to participate in outdoor non-contact sports and organised exercise with groups of up to 15 people from Friday.

The First Minister said yesterday that the country needed to remain “cautious” despite restrictions being lifted in the coming days.

Ms Sturgeon also mentioned that nearly everyone over the age of 65 has received the first dose of the vaccine, and she was “reasonably confident” the target of vaccinating every adult in Scotland by the end of July would be met.
