West Lothian resident captures incredible snap of rare white squirrel in his garden

A Scot has captured a series of stunning photographs of a rare white squirrel that regularly visits his back garden.

Stuart Henry took the pictures as the albino squirrel poked its nose in and around his bird feeder.

The West Lothian resident said the beautiful animal, which has pristine snow white fur and distinctive red eyes, is a regular visitor to his garden.

An albino squirrel is so rare the chances of spotting one are just one in 100,000, with around only 50 of them living in the UK.

The condition affects around one in a million grey squirrels, and is caused by an absence of melanin, which affects the colour of their fur and eyes.

Unbelievably Stuart said that this isn't his first sighting of such an elusive rodent, he said: "The white squirrel appears frequently from a tree belt behind the house.

"We know there are greys about as well. I've noticed the albino ones about for a few years, though I'm not sure if it’s the same one or not."

Sharing some of his pics on a local Facebook group, Stuart wrote: "A wee visitor today."

The post, which has had over three and a half thousand likes, saw fellow animal fans flock to comment.

One user wrote: "First time I've seen one of these, wow it's awesome. Nice catch."

While others described it as "ghost like" and added that they'd never seen an albino squirrel before.

Very active around this time of year as they forage on the ground for food.

The sighting follows a similar one of another albino squirrel enjoying the crisp winter weather in Edinburgh's Saughton Park last year.
