West Lothian prisoner jailed for stabbing man in street row dies behind bars

A West Lothian inmate who stabbed a man during a street argument has passed away behind bars, the Scottish Prison Service has announced.

Paul McEwan Lindsay was sentenced for seven years in 2019 after he was found guilty of assaulting George Bell to the danger of his life at Kelvin Gardens, Hamilton, on June 24 2018.

Lindsay, 31, died at HMP Addiewell in West Lothian last week and officers say that the death will be investigated in a Fatal Accident Inquiry.

At first Lindsay was accused of attempting to murder Mr Bell during the knife attack but a jury at the High Court in Glasgow cleared him of this and he was found guilty of the lesser charge, the Daily Record reports.

During the trial Lindsay confessed to harming Mr Bell but said that he had been acting in self-defence. The court was told during the trial that Lindsay had punched Mr Bell in the head before stabbing him.

It is understood that Mr Bell suffered wounds to his neck and chest that were seen as "potentially life-threatening".

Lindsay had a history of previous convictions for assault, with one incident involving a baseball bat and sword. He was a deemed "high risk" to the public.

An SPS statement said: "Paul McEwan Lindsay, 31, prisoner at HMP Addiewell died on January 31, 2023. He was convicted at Glasgow High Court in 2019.

"Police Scotland have been notified and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
