West Lothian police warn motorists to be vigilant as fuel theft is on the rise

West Lothian police officers are warning to the public to be on their guard against fuel thefts.

They said this week that given the increase in fuel prices, thieves have been targeting fuel tanks as well as tanks on vehicles.

They have issued a number of tips on how people and businesses can be vigilant and not become targets.

These include implementing a fuel management system, especially where there may be many users or the tank is located out of sight.

A good fuel management system should enable the owner to accurately record the users, date and time of use, provide the first line of defence against unauthorised use via a key fob, code or similar and constantly monitor fuel levels (crucial when the tank is refilled as theft can take place during this process).

People should also Keep the tank visible and reduce access points, fit and alarm, use anti-siphoning devices and consider a Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS).
