West Lothian police urge people to be mindful of security after spate of break-ins and car thefts

Police officers are reminding people in Bathgate to be mindful of their home security, following a number of break-ins and vehicle thefts over the past two days.

Enquiries are ongoing into six reports of break-ins or attempted break-ins across the town, with four cars being stolen. None of the vehicles have been recovered to date.

West Lothian Inspector James Gowling said: “A number of these incidents involved access being gained to homes through insecurities like open windows and unlocked doors. As such, we are urging local residents to take extra care, as our investigation continues.

“Keep your doors and windows locked when you’re not at home, or rooms are unattended, to deter opportunistic thieves. Where possible, do not leave valuables or car keys on display or close to an accessible door or window. Finally, do not leave your personal belongings or ID in your vehicle.

“Opportunistic thefts can happen in an instant. Taking a little time to be extra mindful of your security can save you in the long run.

“At this time, we would also ask anyone with information on these thefts over the past couple of days to please call police on 101.”
