West Lothian mum demands level crossing installed on busy road to protect children

A mum in West Lothian has started a petition demanding that the council install a crossing near a local primary school.

Evelyn Stewart has demanded West Lothian Council stop letting children "[take] their lives in their hands" after being told that a crossing was unlikely to be introduced under the railway bridge on Bathgate's Whitburn Road.

The woman's children are pupils at the nearby Windyknowe Primary School and use the crossing regularly.

After being in contact with the council for over a year regarding the road, Evelyn decided to raise awareness of the issue and try to garner support amongst the community.

As reported by the Daily Record, the parent council at St Mary's Primary School expressed concern about the width of the paths leading to nearby schools on Whitburn Road.

Evelyn has since launched a second petition with the aim of increasing pressure on West Lothian Council to do something about the issues.

She told The Courier: “As a mum we use the cycle path and we often go up in the Little Boghead direction and there is no crossing.

“Trying to get across the road with two young children is a bit of an obstacle. I walk my dog in the area and have seen a lady in a mobility scooter trying to get across and had to stop the traffic for her.

“Everyone I speak to says nothing will happen, and this has been going on for years, so I just thought I would give this a go and see what will happen.

“Even if it is just an island in the middle of the road or something to give a bit of respite for the pedestrian that could be caught short.”

On the petition she says she has witnessed kids on bikes and dog walkers all “taking their lives in their hands” trying to cross the road.

She says: “With great focus on Spaces For People, and encouraging us all to get away from cars, keeping us all safe is imperative.”
