West Lothian gran scoops £379,000 on Postcode Lottery

A grandmother from West Lothian is among lottery winners celebrating after winning a share of a £16.9 million lottery prize.

75-year-old Lily Poland is originally from West Calder and won £379,062 with People's Postcode Lottery when her postcode was announced as the full winning postcode of the lottery’s largest ever prize on Friday.

Lily moved to England’s South Coast for “an adventure” when she was 19 years old and stayed after falling in love. She has now lived at the winning postcode in Goring-by-Sea for over 40 years.

Jason Donovan, a People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador, knocked on her door to surprise her. She was joined by her daughter Michelle as she got the good news.

Lily said: “I used to work at Butlin’s in Ayr and would get the train from West Calder to Glasgow, and then from Glasgow to the holiday park.

“I came down here when I was 19 for an adventure. I ended up staying when I fell in love with Peter, my husband. We’ve been at this postcode for over 40 years now and brought our family up here – it’s been a good postcode with lots of memories!”

The grandmother of two plans to use some of her winnings to return to Scotland.

Lily said: “I’ve not been back home to Scotland in such a long time and I miss the accent. I’d definitely like to return and see how much West Lothian has changed since I was last there.”

Ten of Lily’s neighbours also won £379,062 each, while another doubled their prize to £758,124 thanks to playing with two tickets.

A further 706 people across the BN12 4 postcode area also won cheques ranging from £14,816 to £44,448 depending on the number of tickets played with.
