West Lothian garage gives handy hints on how to keep your car in top condition

The Courier and the award-winning mechanics at The Garage, Whitburn, have teamed up again to give one lucky reader the chance to win a Class 4 MOT (MOT only).

And this week Ian Robertson and his team are giving out handy tips on how to keep your car reliable.

To ensure your car journeys are hassle free, it is very important to keep your car in very good condition. A well-maintained car provides you with the reliability and peace of mind you need to enjoy your car to the fullest.

Here’s five easy-to-follow tips to keep your car’s reliability high.

The first is get your car serviced on time.

There is no way around this and it is of utmost importance to keep your car serviced as per its maintenance schedule.

Next check the health of your battery.

The battery is one of the most underrated components of a car. But if a battery fails, no matter how well maintained the car is, you may get stalled.

You should also check tyre pressure regularly as keeping the tyres properly inflated not only improves your car’s performance and mileage but also ensures proper grip on the road and better handling performance.

A poorly inflated tyre or an over-inflated tyre are both dangerous.

Next check coolant, windshield washer and engine oil levels.

In summer, car engines tend to heat up more than usual so you must check for coolant levels especially before leaving for a long journey. It is also advisable to have enough windshield washer liquid levels.

You should also check the engine oil level with the dipstick provided in the engine. Use the car’s user manual for details on how to check the same for your car.

Finally check your spare tyre and toolkit.

Always check the condition and tyre pressure of the spare tyre in your car.

What if your car doesn’t have a standard spare tyre or no spare? Plan ahead so you know what to do and who will you call.
