West Lothian floods: photos show shocking damage to Broxburn homes as residents pick up the pieces

Shocking images have emerged of the aftermath of last night's devastating flooding in West Lothian.

Local residents were evacuated from their homes in Broxburn on Thursday night after areas suddenly became submerged in water due to heavy rainfall.

Cars were seen floating in the streets as the fire service took locals to safety by boat.

And this afternoon, the real damage was uncovered as the clean-up operation began in some of the worst-affected areas.

On Friday afternoon local MP Hannah Bardell visited the site and shared harrowing images of the destruction caused inside many of the houses hit hardest by the water.

The water appears to have reached astonishing heights, with silt stains and markings reaching as high as one locals bathroom sink.

Similar filth and silt can be seen over almost everything the water has come into contact with, one residents washing machine was even still full of the water that had crept in overnight.

Another image shared by Hannah Bardell also showed a family's living room completely destroyed, with their furniture completely ruined and children's clothes and toys lying sodden on the carpet.

Addressing her constituents, Bardell also explained that many affected will be in need of serious help, adding:

"Unfortunately there is a number of people here who don't have insurance.

"There are people here who are on low incomes and have lost everything, a great number of their belongings will also need replaced."

Currently West Lothian Council are in the process of locating suitable temporary accommodation for those who cannot return to their homes, with a relief centre also to be set up at the Strath Rock Partnership Centre.

The relief centre hopes to provide food, voucher donations and any other items required by the Broxburn families.
