West Lothian emu confuses locals after being caught bin-raiding at bus stop

An emu left West Lothian locals a little surprised this week after it was spotted bin raiding at a nearby bus stop.

The huge animal had been caught standing at the shelter in Livingston as it rummaged through the rubbish in hope of finding a snack.

A slightly unusual sight, an image of the bird, who is believed to be called Shirley, quickly went viral as residents couldn't quite believe their eyes.

Thought to have escaped from a local animal shelter, the Record reports that after breaking free for its festive day trip out, the emu was eventually returned.

Initially shared on twitter by @Smallgingergirl, the picture was captioned 'Living in Livingston you get used to seeing some strange things, an ostrich raiding the bin, however, is a new one.'

She later added: “It belongs to a local cattery and is apparently called Shirley.”

The tweet has over 2k likes since being posted yesterday with users left in stitches.

Gavin Hamilton replied: “Sorry - that’s just off the scale for ‘strange things’ what is going on?”
