West Lothian driver gets car stuck while trying to cross River Almond

This is the dramatic moment a driver had to be pulled from a Scots river after his car got stuck in the water while apparently trying to cross.

The red Suzuki became trapped in the waters of the River Almond near Livingston at 3.30pm on Saturday.

The driver was forced to get help after the vehicle became stuck with a French bulldog inside.

Photographs taken from a footpath nearby show the driver behind the wheel of the car, before wading out into the water.

It is not clear why the driver was trying to cross the river in his car.

In the pictures, first shared by our sister title the Daily Record, he can be seen desperately trying to attach tow cables to the front of the stricken vehicle so another motorist could pull it free.

The passerby, who did not wish to be named said: "It looked as though they had already attempted to pull the car backwards onto the bank but it hadn't worked, so they attached a rope onto the front of the vehicle instead and with the help of a 4x4 on the other side, they pulled the car out.

"There was nobody hurt or anything thankfully, and that's the main thing."

The eye witness added that they aren't sure why he tried to cross in the first place as the river levels seemed quite high after the recent snow melt.

It is unclear if emergency services attended the rescue or not.

Both Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Services told the Record that they had not received any calls about any incidents on the river at that time.
