West Lothian cyclist who survived horror crash to attempt new world record around Scotland

A cyclist from Livingston, West Lothian, who was nearly killed after being hit by a car at 70mph in Texas while cycling around the world, is now hoping to break a world record.

West Lothian cyclist Josh Quigley, 28, was airlifted to hospital after being hit by the vehicle during his epic "ride around the world" attempt last year.

Josh felt inspired to cycle around the globe as part of his recovery from depression and alcohol abuse, but sadly his time was cut short when the horrific accident occurred.

The cyclist was flown home early from his cycle in December 2019, after ending up in an American hospital with a broken heel bone, pelvis, ribs, fractured skull and a punctured lung.

Now almost a year on and the inspirational cyclist has made a full recovery from the crash and has set his sights on another incredible adventure.

Quigley told BBC Scotland how he hopes to break a world record by cycling the famous North Coast 500 road in the fastest time.

The current record is held by James McCallum who cycled the 516-mile route in 31hrs and 23 mins.

The Livingston man is hoping to attempt the world-record to raise money for Baylor Scott & White Medical Centre, in Temple, Texas, where he was nursed back to health after his accident.

Josh told the BBC, "During the weeks I spent there, I had a series of surgical procedures including a traumatic brain injury, fractured skull, seven broken ribs, punctured lung and multiple fractures to my back and legs.

"I then had rigorous physiotherapy and a rehabilitation plan so that just 11 weeks later, I was back on my bike.

"So the centre means so much to me."

Josh will begin his record-breaking cycle attempt from Inverness Castle at 5:00am this Saturday.
