West Lothian Council say they are prepared should the Scottish Government extend the school closures

West Lothian Council say are prepared should the schools have to remain closed.

Nicola Sturgeon announced at the start of the month that schools would stay closed until at least February 1.

She said: “I know that remote learning presents significant challenges for teachers, schools, parents and young people.

“We will work to support children and parents throughout this.”

The Scottish Government closed schools after the Christmas holiday period because of fears of the new variant of Covid-19.

Children in the rest of the United Kingdom are also learning from home until the middle of February as the third wave of the virus spreads.

Ms Sturgeon is now due to review the school measures on Monday, January 18, but the council assured The Courier that they are prepared if the First Minister decides to extend the closures.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Like all councils we are following the guidance set out by the Scottish Government but will amend our services and Education provision should the guidance change.

“If the Scottish Government make the decision to extend the closure of schools for a longer period of time the council has robust online learning arrangements in place to ensure that pupils continue to receive the best possible education under the circumstances.”
