West Lothian Council is only local authority developing teaching programmes on women's health

West Lothian is leading the way in Scotland in introducing women’s health education into schools.

It is the only local authority to work to develop teaching programmes.

The work follows the council’s support for Endo Warriors West Lothian which seeks to improve information about the painful condition of endometriosis.

A report to the Executive highlighted what work the council has already done.

Lisamaria Purdie, an education officer with the council, said: “Members of the Secondary Depute Headteacher Support Group and their colleagues noted that the materials could complement existing curriculum courses in Human Biology, Personal and Social Education and Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood to raise awareness amongst young people and their parents/carers.”

Depute council leader, Councillor Kirsteen Sullivan, said: “We are really leading the way in menstrual health education.”
