West Lothian Council back down on cycle lanes after local councillor complains

West Lothian Council have changed the status of cycle lanes in a West Lothian village.

Councillor Stuart Borrowman had been calling for West Lothian Council to remove the lanes because they were causing congestion on the roads.

The council appear to have backed down and the cycle lanes will now be advisory only.

The Courier reported two weeks ago that Councillor Borrowman complained that the new lanes left locals in Blackridge unable to park and access a bus stop.

Mr Borrowman had been liaising with West Lothian Council and the bollards that were obstructing the bus stop were soon removed.

He then went onto call for the cycle lanes to be advisory only.

Speaking on social media last week, he said: “I’m grateful the bollards at the Parkville were immediately removed after I complained about the obstruction at the bus stop and the rear of Fleming Place.

“The council needs to downgrade these lanes to advisory and remove the bollards.

“We all want reduced traffic speed and safe roads for all users including cyclists but this isn’t what’s needed.

“My most recent complaint this morning came from a cyclist who wasn’t using the lanes and thinks them unhelpful.”

He followed that post up two days later by saying that more bollards had been removed from the roads and that he had been assured the cycle lanes will be reduced to advisory to permit on-street parking.

Mr Borrowman then posted again yesterday to say that he had been assured that all remaining bollards would be removed from the roads over the next week.

The Courier revealed last year that the council had invested £142,000 on street cycle lanes in Linlithgow, Broxburn and Blackridge as part of the Spaces for People programme.
