Big-hearted West Lothian College students were on hand to help out a local business in need of some carpentry work in order to gain some extra experience.
Three students from the college’s Construction and Motor Vehicle centre offered to step in when Livingston based Artisan Cheesecakes were in need of carpenters to freshen up their kitchen.
Wendy McQueen, owner of Artisan Cheesecakes has worked with the college’s Employer Engagement team in the past and was only too happy to give the students a chance to enhance their skills in a real life setting. She commented:
“This has been a brilliant community project. It gives students the opportunity to work in a real project in a work-based setting.”
Work experience opportunities such as the one offered by Wendy give young people earlier exposure to the world of work by helping them develop the skills, experience and knowledge they’ll need when they leave college.
Wendy continued: “The student’s lecturer Stephen Cunningham was excellent, tutoring and encouraging the students throughout the process. I think the students enjoyed learning outside of the class room setting. They were all a pleasure to have in Artisan Cheesecakes Kitchen, and they all enjoyed sampling our cheesecakes. A massive thank you to West Lothian College.”
