Two West Lothian butchers have brought home the bacon at a prestigious food awards ceremony.
A Broxburn butcher who has spent years helping to train the next generation for the industry has been recognised with a national award along with an apprentice who is already making a name for himself.
Wilson Hendry (54), who lives in Linlithgow, lifted the Training Mentor of the Year 2022 in the Scottish Craft Butchers annual training awards.
Meanwhile Jordan McCaughan reached the final of the Modern Apprentice of the Year SCQF 6.
Nominated by one of his colleagues at meat wholesalers AK Stoddart, Wilson expressed shock and delight at securing the coveted accolade for his mentoring work with apprentice butchers - a role he described as “hugely rewarding”.
He continued: “It’s so rewarding to pass on the skills of the trade to those tasked with taking the meat industry forward and I like to think that I educate them as well as train them for the task ahead.
“We have around 10 to 15 trainees coming through Stoddarts each year and it’s vital that we make the time to nurture them and work with them to take them to the next level.”
Meanwhile Jordan - who works in the Hugh Black and Son’s Bathgate factory and Armadale shop - was recognised for all the hard work he put in throughout his training.
There are over 300 butcher apprentices in Scotland so this is a huge achievement and very well deserved.
