West Lothian businesses 'suffering due to continuous flooding'

A West Lothian councillor has expressed his frustration at the continuous flooding of the A89 between Blackridge and Armadale.

The stretch of road is known to flood during periods of heavy rainfall and it is understood that the issue has been highlighted with the local council in the past.

But despite resident frustrations and concerns, the problematic gully that is causing the build up of water has not been replaced, despite the council allegedly stating it would be in December 2021.

Councillor Stuart Borrowman has said that carers have been unable to reach their clients and that certain takeaway businesses have been forced to suspend deliveries to Blackridge from Armadale as a result of the road being regularly flooded.

He said: “This problem has persisted for too long.

“Anyone with a small car would not be able to travel between Blackridge and Armadale and I’ve been told of carers unable to reach service users and hot food deliveries to Blackridge suspended.

“The Council told me the problematic gully would be replaced in mid-December but that didn’t happen.

“I’ve pressed officials that this has to be a priority to be done and I’ve lodged an information request to try to get to the bottom of why this has gone on so long.”

Residents that are part of an Armadale community group have expressed their disbelief that the issue is still not fixed.

One member, who shared the video of the flooded road at night with Edinburgh Live, said that the road is inundated with water “every time there is heavy rain.”

Another member said: “Same the other night going from Seafield to Livingston as it was flooded and didn't see it till I hit it as Road was too dark. Angry is not the word as it snaped my support bracket for my fuel tank.”

The Peking House in Armadale posted on Hogmany that they had to suspend deliveries to Blackridge due to the flooding on the road.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said:“ We are aware of incidents of flooding on this section of road with a crew recently attending the location to remove surface water following a period of bad weather, however the road remained open and was passable with care while this was carried out.

“Plans are already in place to improve drainage at the location and the work will be carried out as soon as possible.”
