A West Lothian brass band is celebrating after achieving the best result in 23 years for a Scottish band at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
Whitburn Band, conducted by Garry Cutt, finished in third place at the competition, which was held on Saturday, October 12, at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Their performance of ‘Titan’s Progress’ by Hermann Pallhuber impressed the judges, and was only beaten by Cory Band from Wales and Black Dyke from Yorkshire.
It is the best result Whitburn has achieved at the iconic contest in 30 years, and it ensures that the band will once again perform at the Royal Albert Hall for the competition in 2020.
Whitburn Band Chairman Charlie Farren said: “The band is delighted with third place, and we thank Garry for all his hard work. The band continues to move forward, and we look forward to some major concerts in the last few months of the year, starting with our engagement with John Wallace next month.”
Next year’s is Whitburn’s 150th anniversary year, and preparations are well under way to mark the milestone.
The next event Whitburn will perform at is a concert with the celebrated trumpeter John Wallace at the Old Kirk in Kirkcaldy, at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 9.
