West Lothian below national average as Nicola Sturgeon warns Covid-19 pandemic is not "done with us yet"

Despite infections rising elsewhere West Lothian is well below the national average for Covid-19 infections.

The latest Public Health Scotland data shows there were seven new cases of the coronavirus in the region as of May 17.

Only seven of the 37 neighbourhoods in West Lothian have returned positive cases of Covid-19 in the last week.

Blackridge, Westfield and Torphichen had the highest amount of infections, with six cases among their 3743 residents.

The figures also show that across the week between May 9 to May 15 there were another 43 cases recorded.

This means the weekly positivity rate is 23.5 per 100,000 residents, well below the national average of 35.5, and safely within the Level Two threshold.

Three of the 32 local authorities in Scotland have Level Three positivity rates, Glasgow with 104.6 per 100,000, East Renfrewshire with 94.2 and Midlothian with 57.3 per 100,000.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon was formally elected First Minister by the chamber at Scottish Parliament today.

Speaking, afterwards Ms Sturgeon “As a result of our collective sacrifice and the power of vaccination we have made progress but in the past few days we have also been reminded that covid is not done with us yet.

“The virus still poses dangers that we must take serious, tough decisions still lie ahead and so I do want to reiterate the pledge I made during the election campaign.

“For as long as it necessary every ounce of my focus will be on navigating us through this pandemic and keeping our country as safe as possible.”

Newly elected MSP Sandesh Gulhane then asked for an update on the rising infections in Glasgow.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney replied that Nicola Sturgeon has recently announced the Scottish Government's response to the situation in Glasgow.

He continued: "However, in the past few days there has been a significant expansion of the testing programme and capacity within the communities most directly affected by increasing cases.

"This has also been supported by an expansion of the vaccination programme."

Swinney then continued by saying that Nicola Sturgeon would have another update at the end of the week on any regions with increasing infection levels.
