West Lothian basketball quartet hoping to be part of Scotland under-16 squad for European Championships

Four West Lothian basketball players have been called-up to the Scotland under-16 women’s training camp squad for the European Championships.

St Margaret’s Academy pupil Kirstin Clark will be joined on the trip to Moldova by The James Young High School duo Rose Harvey and Jenni Torrance as well as Haddington-based Lucy Lemmon.

The quartet have been part of the West Lothian Wolves side who had a successful season on the domestic front and will be aiming to replicate that success on the continent when they travel to Moldova for the tournament, which is taking place from between July 16 and 21.

The Scots have been drawn in Group B alongside Wales, Cyprus and Malta and will be favourites to at least replicate last year’s silver medal finish.

Prior to the European Championships, the squad will be taking part in an Invitational Tournament in June in Denmark.

And in order to get to Moldova, the girls and their families are taking part in a number of fundraising events to help pay for the trip.

Scotland head coach Donnie MacDonald commented: “It is really exciting to be going back to the European Championships Division C in the same venue as last year and potentially with a number of returning players as the familiarity with our surroundings could be a great advantage for us.

“Having won the silver medal last year, we have our sights firmly set on going one better this time.

“However, as our programme is entirely funded by the players, in order to get there our first goal is raising enough funds to cover all the costs. The players and their families have been working very hard to bring in sponsorship and raise money through a range of other activities, but we still have a bit of work to do in order to reach our target.”

A range of sponsorship packages are available for companies. If you would like to find out more information, please contact amy.kirkhouse@basketball-scotland.com.

Alternatively, a Just Giving page has been set up for the squad and can be found at www. www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/amy-kirkhouse-2.
