A talented local artist will see her work take flight when it is displayed at Edinburgh Airport.
Lesley Welsh is one of only 150 artists to be chosen to have their Oor Wullie sculptures put on display as part of the Oor Wullie Big Bucket Trail.
The arts project starts on Monday and will run until August 30, culminating in a series of farewell events and auctions in each of the five host cities: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.
Lesley’s creation, a five foot ‘multiculture’ version of the cartoon character covered in flags from all over the world, will greet travellers at Edinburgh Airport.
Lesley, who lives in Armadale and teaches at Windyknowe, Westfield, Blackridge and Longridge Primary Schools, is delighted her creation was picked to feature on the trail.
She said: “As the world seems to be getting smaller and smaller with the widespread use of technology and as a local teacher and mum, I wanted to highlight the importance of multicultural education in our classrooms.
“This is reflected in my design, entitled ‘Oor Multicultural Wullie’.
“Students who have access via the internet to international gaming, shopping and social media sites need an even better understanding of the similarities and differences between their own cultures and those of the world around them.
“Likewise, the ever-present reality of conflicts between nations reinforces the importance of multicultural education.”
She added: “I am absolutely delighted that my entry was
picked.
“At my age and stage in my career I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to take part in anything like this and it’s been fantastic.”
