West Lothain Council saves six figure sum after road works were halted in the county

The Covid-19 lockdown put the brakes on everyday life across West Lothian, and that includes road repairs.

The council’s Executive heard a budget update report which detailed a £271,000 underspend on the roads budget since April.

A report to the meeting said: “This is largely due to an estimated 30 per cent reduction in variable spend (excluding winter).

In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic has had an adverse impact on Public Utilities income and an under recovery of £179,000 is anticipated.”

Public works were put on hold due to Covid-19 working restrictions and the regular maintenance programme has only recently restarted.

Head of operational services, Jim Jack told the meeting that work to catch up on projects had started.

He added: “We are making attempts to catch up where we can through contractors, though there is some resource pressure.
