West Indies star Chris Gayle hints at retirement U-turn after brutal 162 against England

Chris Gayle may shelve plans to retire from 50-over cricket after he scored a brutal 162 for West Indies in Wednesday's defeat by England.

The self-styled ‘Universe Boss’ has had a sparkling one-day series in the Caribbean and hinted he may carry on beyond the World Cup later this year, which he had originally planned to be his last act in the one-day arena.

Gayle has long been a roaming Twenty20 specialist but said: “I’m nearly 40. But could I un-retire? We’ll see. We’ll take it slowly. Maybe you can see a bit more Chris Gayle.”

Gayle became the 14th batsman to reach 10,000 runs in one-day international cricket after his brilliant innings against England.

His form in the current one-day series against England, which has featured knocks of 135, 50 and 162, has taken him past the 10,000-mark and makes him only the second West Indian, after Brian Lara, to reach five figures.
