West Ham produced a dismal performance as they fell to a 5-1 defeat to Chelsea in their first home game of the season, heaping yet more pressure on the already-beleaguered Graham Potter.
Lucas Paqueta scored an emotional opener barely six minutes into a frenetic first half, but what started out as an evenly-balanced encounter descended into farce as the Blues ran riot in west London.
Joao Pedro equalised but West Ham were unlucky to have a Niclas Fullkrug goal ruled out for offside, and from briefly leading 2-1 they rapidly found themselves falling further and further behind.
Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernandez, Trevoh Chalobah and Moises Caicedo all scored from routine crosses, with the hosts punished for woeful defending and keeper Mads Hermansen having another difficult night, while Enzo Maresca’s men responded brilliantly after their drab 0-0 opening draw with Crystal Palace - and showed their strength in depth even without Cole Palmer, who went off injured in the warm-up.

The deep-seated issue that explains West Ham’s worrying decline
22:48 , Flo CliffordYou could focus on the good, like Joao Pedro’s supreme impact and how Chelsea might have now started a proper challenge, except it’s impossible not to get away from the bad.
And this was very bad from West Ham United, to the point that Graham Potter looks in immediate danger. Might he even be gone before Nuno Espirito Santo? Could the Nottingham Forest manager replace him, given issues there?
Read Miguel Delaney’s report from London Stadium (if the West Ham fans reading this can stomach it...)

The deep-seated issue that explains West Ham’s worrying decline
Graham Potter: 'We have to dust ourselves down'
22:40 , Flo CliffordGraham Potter speaks to Sky Sports: “Incredibly disappointed of course with the result.
“A good start, scored a great goal and then conceded a cheap goal and that probably set the tone for the evening.
“We played a top side but the manner of the goals we conceded made it impossible for us. We have to do better. We are disappointed with the goals and disappointed with the result.
“We have to dust ourselves down and prepare to play against Wolves.”
On new signings, he says, “We will always look but it’s more fundamental than that, we have to make it harder for teams to score against us.”
Marc Cucurella: 'Reaction was very good'
22:33 , Flo CliffordContrast that with Marc Cucurella, who continues, “We are very happy. I think in the last game we missed something. I think we don't play our style but I think today, at the beginning, we started a little bit sloppy but the reaction from the team was very good. We showed a lot of energy. We want to play good football and we have a good result tonight.”
Jarrod Bowen: 'Basic football, I don't think we're doing well enough'
22:28 , Flo CliffordAn understandably sombre Jarrod Bowen speaks to Sky Sports. “Think you can probably imagine [the emotions], fuming, disappointed, all the emotions that come off the back of conceding eight goals in two games and not picking up a point yet. I thought the goals were really cheap on our behalf. Kind of gifted the goals away.
“It’s a collective, when things are going well it’s easy to pick up your individual awards but you’ve got to point the finger at everyone. We have to all look at ourselves, take the responsibility.”
Asked about Potter coming under pressure, Bowen says: “The players are out there on the pitch, the manager can’t influence that. Basic football, I don’t think we’re doing well enough - I can tell you that. As captain it’s down to me to get a reaction out of everyone.”
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
22:21 , Flo Clifford“That’s a squad that’s going to be in a relegation fight,” Jamie Redknapp says on Sky Sports.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
22:16 , Flo CliffordThe two sides actually had the same number of shots - 12 - but West Ham had four on target to Chelsea’s seven.
West Ham finished with an xG of 0.94, to the Blues’ 2.93.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
22:11 , Flo Clifford

Marc Cucurella: 'We showed we have a top team'
22:03 , Flo CliffordMarc Cucurella chats to Sky Sports. “It was difficult [losing Cole Palmer in the warm-up] because we practice one thing, at the end we need to change very fast,” he says. “Estevao in this case played an amazing game, all of us are ready at any time, we showed we have a top team.
“He showed that he is very mature, made good decisions, all the new players came here to help the team and to bring some good energy, good talent. Hopefully we can do good things this season.”
FULL-TIME: West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:57 , Flo Clifford90+3 mins: Neto is still full of beans and he sprints down most of the pitch, threatening yet again, before Aguerd barges him out of the way.
Boos ring out at the full-time whistle. An embarrassment of a London derby for the hosts.
PENALTY APPEAL! West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:55 , Flo Clifford90+2 mins: More late drama? Neto is at the back post but the ball glances off Aguerd’s arm and Chelsea shout for a penalty!
VAR says he basically couldn’t help it, so no penalty. He does get a corner, but it’s cleared.
Fernandez recycles it and Hermansen collects easily, to ironic cheers.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:54 , Flo Clifford90 mins: Hato goes into the book for hauling down Potts.
Time for West Ham to pull a late consolation goal back? Fofana brings down Ward-Prowse and the set-piece magician takes the free-kick, in a central and very good position.
But it cannons off the wall and harmlessly out. Ward-Prowse takes the resulting corner, but Kilman doesn’t connect with it properly.
Three minutes added on here.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:50 , Flo Clifford86 mins: Bowen wins West Ham another corner, which Ward-Prowse swings in. Aguerd heads off target. Just not happening tonight.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:46 , Flo Clifford82 mins: “Can we play you every week,” sing the Chelsea fans.
The industrious Bowen wins a corner, but it comes to nothing.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:41 , Flo Clifford78 mins: The visiting fans applaud Estevao as he makes way for Gittens.
The ‘oles’ start up again as Chelsea float around the pitch.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:39 , Flo Clifford76 mins: Sanchez sends the ball flying and this could be awkward for the West Ham back line, who are nowhere... Neto receives it but Wan-Bissaka barges him over and that’s danger averted.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:37 , Flo Clifford74 mins: Danger for West Ham! Chelsea break from nowhere and the danger man is the teenager Estevao, who drives forward, jinks round his man, but doesn’t shoot early enough and Hermansen manages to flap gratefully onto it.
Estevao wins it back! He crosses across to a charging Santos but the latter’s cross is a tad too enthusiastic.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:34 , Flo Clifford71 mins: Chelsea make changes: Fofana on for Chalobah, James for Gusto, Cucurella for Hato.
For the hosts, Soucek comes off for Walker-Peters.
Better from West Ham! Suddenly a flurry of chances; Wilson is in space but gets closed down and Walker-Peters has a go, but is blocked. The last five minutes have been more promising.
CLOSE! West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:32 , Flo Clifford69 mins: West Ham have another chance and it’s through Bowen again, really trying his best to gee his team up. The flag went up anyway.
Soucek floats it in towards Wilson, Chelsea save but Potts gets his toe to it and is very narrowly denied by a brilliant save by Sanchez! Heading for the top corner but palmed over the bar!
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:28 , Flo Clifford65 mins: West Ham conceded three goals at Sunderland and five already tonight. Eight is the most goals they’ve shipped across the opening two games in the top flight, ever.
Paqueta is down and gets checked over, a teammate leaning over to check he’s alright - seems a possible facial injury.
Bowen curls the ball across to Wilson, it’s a slightly awkward angle and his header slices wide. But a chance for West Ham, at least.
West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:26 , Flo Clifford63 mins: An angry home fan tries to come onto the pitch. Potter looks deeply depressed.
Neto wants more: he runs down the left channel, but Fernandez launches it over the bar.
Delap, who’s one of the few Chelsea players to not score, comes off for Santos.
GOAL! West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
21:23 , Flo Clifford58 mins: God, this is woeful.
Chalobah is the next to strike. Straightforward Chelsea corner, Hermansen gets boxed in and flaps around helplessly, the ball bounces around a bit and Chalobah is perfectly positioned to volley in Pedro’s header.
West Ham 1-4 Chelsea
21:21 , Flo Clifford58 mins: That was some dreadful keeping, Hermansen seemingly in two minds about punching it away or trying to catch it, and all Caicedo needed to do was stick a boot vaguely in its path.
West Ham are stretched at the back again, Delap lays it off for Neto, but Soucek rolls away his attempted cross.
Estevao comes again but Diouf makes the vital interception to send it rolling out.
GOAL! West Ham 1-4 Chelsea
21:19 , Flo Clifford54 mins: Oh dear, oh dear.
Cucurella runs unchecked onto a ball down the left and it looks good for Chelsea - but his attempted cross thumps off Kilman.
The visitors take the resulting cross, West Ham are all over the place, and Hermansen palms it away but not far enough. A rather surprised Caicedo manages to get a foot to it and knock in, clipping it off the bar and under, into the net. It’s very soft indeed.
CLOSE! West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
21:14 , Flo Clifford51 mins: West Ham’s xG was 0.18 to Chelsea’s 1.65 in that first half. (Paqueta’s goal alone was 0.01, which is pretty damn impressive, if you care for the stats.)
Pedro plays it forward to Fernandez and Chelsea drive forward with ease; Neto crosses in from the left for Fernandez but he blasts over the bar! Alarm bells ringing for West Ham.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
21:11 , Flo Clifford48 mins: No changes for Chelsea, they hardly need to.
Soucek tries to chip it over the head of several Chelsea players for Paqueta, but it rolls out. Now one plays a back-pass towards Sanchez, who has to hastily boot it clear to avoid the rapidly-closing Paqueta.
SECOND HALF: West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
21:08 , Flo CliffordBack on. What can West Ham do?
Replacements, that’s what: Potts on for Todibo, Wilson on for Fullkrug. 21-year-old Potts in particular gets a big cheer on his Premier League debut for the Hammers.
HALF-TIME: West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:59 , Flo CliffordTodibo’s foot may well prove the crucial turning point in this game... but after their sluggish start Chelsea have been streets ahead. A brilliant early, emotional goal for Lucas Paqueta kicked off 25 minutes of madness, with Niclas Fullkrug unlucky to have another ruled out, unfortunately thanks to Todibo’s foot.
But poor defending has cost West Ham time and time again, with Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernandez the beneficiaries of those lapses at the back. Estevao, after losing possession in the build-up to the hosts’ goal, more than redeemed himself with a delightful run to tee up Chelsea’s third.
Time for the team talk of Graham Potter’s life...
HALF-TIME: West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:53 , Flo Clifford45+6 mins: Late first-half corner for Chelsea... it comes to naught. Don’t think they’ll be too bothered, to be honest.
Boos ring out from the home faithful at the half-time whistle.

West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:51 , Flo Clifford45+6 mins: Chelsea are coasting. After a busy first half this has slowed down considerably.
Ward-Prowse stamps on Caicedo’s boot, rather late there.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:49 , Flo Clifford45+3 mins: Six minutes added on to this first half and the hosts are desperately trying to get something out of this. They win a free-kick; Bowen tries to get onto the end of Ward-Prowse’s curling delivery but Chelsea clear.
West Ham keep trying, Paqueta launches it forward, but it’s just not quite going to plan. Fullkrug goes down as Cucurella pulls him down, and another Chelsea player knocks him with his boot. He’s not very pleased.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:47 , Miguel Delaney at London StadiumChelsea have been good, and executed most things well... but it doesn't feel like they even needed to get to that level. West Ham have been appalling. It's incredible. They're so easy to get it in the air, on the ground, at set-pieces, the body language is terrible. Fans duly started heading for the exits at 33 minutes, after Chelsea made it 3-1. The number of errors in the build-up for all the goals was remarkable.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:43 , Flo Clifford41 mins: Chelsea knock the ball about a bit. Paqueta goes up a gear on the counter and isn’t happy that Fullkrug doesn’t quite the memo, with Chelsea running onto his pass and recollecting possession quickly.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:40 , Flo Clifford39 mins: It’s starting to look a bit desperate for West Ham, who just haven’t built on that fine start at all. Paqueta goes for an acrobatic bicycle kick which is actually not bad at all, but Sanchez collects with ease.
West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:39 , Flo Clifford37 mins: Wan-Bissaka is shoulder-barged by Neto at the byline as he tries to get the hosts back into this, but it’s deemed worthy of goal-kick.
“There’s only one Graham Potter,” jeer the Chelsea fans.
GOAL! West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
20:35 , Flo Clifford33 mins: Diouf tries something for West Ham down the left flank, doggedly coming again when he’s closed down. He sprints again but Chalobah makes the interception... and now Chelsea counter!
Delap holds up play and it’s the teenager Estevao who leaps into life, scything through space to pull it back on the edge of the box - and Fernandez is dead centre to poke it home! Classy from the young Brazilian to tee that up.
Graham Potter shakes his head on the sidelines. Some West Ham fans are already heading for the exits.
West Ham 1-2 Chelsea
20:32 , Flo Clifford31 mins: The volume goes up a notch as Delap powers down the centre, the visiting fans embarking on a round of ‘oles’. Too soon, methinks, but West Ham are looking a lot more tentative now.
West Ham 1-2 Chelsea
20:28 , Flo Clifford27 mins: Play resumes as Gusto is booed hopping off the pitch. VAR decide not to intervene in the Chalobah-Paqueta debate.
We’ve had three goals and one disallowed in 25 minutes - actually less than 25, with all the stoppages. Breathless stuff.
Chelsea come again and Pedro volleys over the bar from 30 yards out.
GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Chelsea
20:25 , Flo Clifford23 mins: The visitors are in front! Chalobah brings down Paqueta in the box but manages to kick the ball across goal to Pedro. His cross is received by Neto, who nips in at the far post and volleys past Hermansen!
West Ham think there was a foul on Paqueta in the build-up, he’s clutching his eye. No dice.
Gusto is down receiving some treatment.
West Ham 1-1 Chelsea
20:23 , Flo CliffordHere’s that equaliser.

DISALLOWED GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Chelsea
20:20 , Flo Clifford17 mins: Madness in the box as Chelsea fail to clear the ball with West Ham pushing, Todibo pulls it back, and Fullkrug, at the back post, slots it home!
But it’s being checked for offside... and it won’t count. Todibo was a foot offside, the semi-automated tech shows.
West Ham 1-1 Chelsea
20:17 , Flo Clifford17 mins: Dreadful defending from West Ham there.
In the build-up to that Chelsea had an appeal for a penalty, with Pedro arguing Kilman blocked his run in the box, but VAR rightly dismissed it.
Hold on...
GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Chelsea
20:16 , Flo Clifford15 mins: Chelsea are piling on the pressure now... Estevao is sprinting towards the post but Diouf makes the vital interception to head it over.
It goes out for a corner, Cucurella flicks it on at the near post, and Joao Pedro nods it in to level things in east London!
West Ham 1-0 Chelsea
20:13 , Flo CliffordThe ideal start for West Ham.

West Ham 1-0 Chelsea
20:11 , Flo Clifford10 mins: Unfortunately that was the youngster Estevao who was robbed cheaply in midfield with an attempted flick backwards, leading to that opening goal. But Sanchez really should have done better.
The atmosphere was already bouncing in here - a real bank holiday weekend feeling - and it’s just gone up a notch. An emotional celebration for Paqueta, too.
There’s a break in play as Fullkrug gets some treatment after colliding with Joao Pedro.
GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Chelsea
20:08 , Flo Clifford6 mins: What a beauty! Paqueta has been lively for West Ham in these opening few minutes. Chelsea fall asleep in midfield, are robbed, and Paqueta is given way too much space to dart and dance through, scoring a belter into the top corner from 25 yards out!
West Ham 0-0 Chelsea
20:05 , Flo Clifford4 mins: Sky Sports reports that Palmer felt something and his withdrawal was precautionary. His replacement, 18-year-old Estevao, has his first touch on his first start (he came off the bench against Palace).
Fullkrug aims a long ball to Wan-Bissaka but there’s too much on it. Early probing here by the hosts.
KICK-OFF: West Ham vs Chelsea
20:01 , Flo CliffordWe have lift-off in this London derby!
Cole Palmer looks gutted on the sidelines - how important will his withdrawal prove?
Team news reminder
19:57 , Flo CliffordWest Ham XI: Hermansen, Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Aguerd, Diouf, Ward-Prowse, Paqueta, Soucek, Bowen, Fullkrug
Chelsea XI: Sanchez, Cucurella, Tosin, Chalobah, Gusto, Caicedo, Enzo, Estevao, Neto, Joao Pedro, Delap
Cole Palmer out with injury
19:55 , Flo CliffordSudden change for Chelsea: Cole Palmer appears to have pulled something in the warm-up and comes out of the starting line-up. Estevao Willian will come in.
Minutes to go
19:53 , Flo Clifford

Graham Potter: 'If we get the right players we'd like to improve'
19:50 , Flo CliffordPotter says of the transfer window, “We lost Mo [Kudus], we've signed Malick [Diouf] and Mads [Hermansen] for money and a couple of free transfers. We need to get the right players. If we get the right players we'd like to improve, of course we do.
“We've still got some time left. But in the meantime, I have to focus on the ones we have and working with them and try to get them better.”
Enzo Maresca: 'In any game you can do something better'
19:45 , Flo CliffordEnzo Maresca tells Sky Sports, “We can attack better [than against Crystal Palace]. We defended quite well, in any game you can do something better. Overall it was a good performance.”
He adds of his lineup tonight, “Joao Pedro gives us many, many options. Tosin gives us experience, he is going to help us with the long ball. We have to say Josh [Acheampong] did very well against Palace, but we already gave games to Josh last year, so we trust Josh 100%.”

Why did VAR disallow Eberechi Eze’s free-kick goal against Chelsea?
19:30 , Flo CliffordFor those who missed it, VAR was largely to thank for Chelsea’s face-saving draw in their opening game of the weekend.
Arsenal-bound Eberechi Eze scored a thumping free-kick but had it ruled out, with the game eventually ending goalless.
It was the first of no doubt many VAR quirks and curiosities to come this season - here’s why Chelsea got away with it:

Why did VAR disallow Eze’s goal for Crystal Palace against Chelsea?
Warning signs for Chelsea?
19:24 , Flo CliffordThe Blues used six attacking players against Crystal Palace with a combined worth of £250m, including summer signings acquired for £160m, but still laboured to a 0-0 draw.
Enzo Maresca chose to look on the positive side, saying: “I don’t know if we (now) have more capacity (to score), but for sure if we’ve made changes it’s because we think that with changes we could improve out attacking phase.
“I was quite happy last year in terms goals we scored but with the amount of chances we created, I think we were one of the best in the league.
“Hopefully this season we can be more clinical when we need to be.”

Graham Potter: 'We got smacked in the nose'
19:18 , Flo CliffordGraham Potter speaks to Sky Sports ahead of tonight’s fixture. “We have to be ready,” he says, before reflecting on the side’s horror show at the Stadium of Light. “When you have a defeat and you are disappointed with the result, you have to analyse what you did well and what you can improve. As an away performance we were OK.
“You plan until you get smacked in the nose and we got smacked in the nose. The demand is that you win.
“Any defeat is tough to take [but] it’s also part of the job and you have to deal with it the best you can. We have to show we can be better.”
Hope for West Ham?
19:10 , Flo CliffordWest Ham don’t have the best of records against Chelsea in recent seasons, losing five of their last seven meetings. But could the visitors’ goalless draw with Crystal Palace last time out offer the hosts some hope? Miguel Delaney reported this from Stamford Bridge:
“It was yet another game where you could see why the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs want Eberechi Eze and half of Crystal Palace’s players. It was also another game where you could see why there have been some doubts over whether Chelsea can go from world champions to champions of their own country.”

Why Eberechi Eze holds the key to the cruel crossroads facing Crystal Palace
Players arriving
19:07 , Flo CliffordChelsea’s exciting new youngster Estevao Willian is on the bench today.
Penny for Cole Palmer’s thoughts?

Team news - changes
19:02 , Flo CliffordMaresca has made three changes from the Blues’ drab draw with Crystal Palace, with Tosin Adarabioyo returning from a minor issue to replace the deputising Josh Acheampong in defence.
Malo Gusto and Liam Delap are also in, while Jamie Gittens and captain Reece James drop to the bench.
Graham Potter has made just the one change, but will hope it’s influential: Tomas Soucek replaces the benched Guido Rodriguez in midfield.
Team news - Delap and Joao Pedro start for visitors
18:57 , Flo CliffordA bold attacking move from Enzo Maresca, who starts both his new star strikers, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
Pedro’s place up front may push Cole Palmer further out to the left, while there’s no place in the squad at all for another frontman, Nicolas Jackson, who is expected to depart Stamford Bridge during the window.

Enzo Maresca clarifies Chelsea stance over signing new centre-back
18:40 , Flo CliffordEnzo Maresca admits Chelsea are now looking to solve their defensive issues internally despite previously revealing his desire for the club to sign another centre-back.
After Levi Colwill’s serious knee injury, Maresca had voiced concerns over the suitability of his other defenders to play the role of middle centre-back.
And while admitting he was assessing options internally, the Italian hinted at a request to dip into the transfer market once again.
"The club know exactly what I think,” Maresca had noted last week before the goalless draw in the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, with Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah eventually starting together in the back four.
"I think we need a central defender. We are looking for an internal solution but as I said, the club know exactly what I think.”

Early team news - Chelsea
18:20 , Flo CliffordThe biggest Chelsea absentee is Levi Colwill, who is set to miss the majority of the campaign after rupturing his ACL in pre-season.
His deputy Tosin Adarabioyo saw out the draw with Crystal Palace with a minor issue but is set to be fit for today, although he could face some competition for a starting place after Josh Acheampong impressed in their opening game.
Nicolas Jackson is back after a three-match suspension which carried over into this season but may not be included with rumours swirling over a move elsewhere, while Romeo Lavia is sidelined again with a minor injury.
Early team news - West Ham
18:10 , Flo CliffordCrysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme remain sidelined for the hosts, while Graham Potter has a dilemma on his hands over Mads Hermansen, who endured a difficult time in goal on his maiden appearance.
Former Newcastle man Callum Wilson could be in line for a full debut having come off the bench last weekend against his old team’s rivals Sunderland.

West Ham vs Chelsea
17:46 , Flo CliffordIt may only be West Ham’s second game of the season but the pressure is already on boss Graham Potter, who welcomes his old side to London Stadium tonight.
A 3-0 loss to Sunderland got things off to a bad start for the Hammers, while Chelsea laboured to a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace despite their plethora of expensive attacking talent.
Both sides have a point to prove in tonight’s encounter. Kickoff is at 8pm BST.

Good evening
