West Ham vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction

West Ham vs Chelsea in the Premier League - (Action Images via Reuters)

West Ham vs Chelsea LIVE

Chelsea came from a goal behind to thrash West Ham United 5-1 on Friday and pile more pressure on home manager Graham Potter after two heavy Premier League defeats in as many matches.

Lucas Paqueta got the hosts off to a dream start when he unleashed a swirling shot past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with six minutes on the clock but Chelsea hit back in the 15th through a Joao Pedro header and the floodgates opened.

After West Ham had a Niclas Fullkrug effort ruled offside, Pedro Neto sent Chelsea ahead on the volley in the 23rd and Enzo Fernandez made it 3-1 from close range on 34 after a pass from Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian.

Moises Caicedo added a fourth in the 54th, after goalkeeper Mads Hermansen pushed the ball to him off a corner, and Trevoh Chalobah became the fifth Chelsea player on the London Stadium scoresheet four minutes later.

Sam Tabuteau at the London Stadium

Mads Hermansen what are you doing. Backed by his manager in the week, he flaps at a cross to hand Chelsea the easiest of fourth goals. A nightmare start to his West Ham career.

GOAL!

21:19 , Alex Young

54min: Game over well before the hour mark as Caicedo adds a fourth.

West Ham just have no clue what they are doing, especially Hermansen who makes it two howlers in as many games.

West Ham have been looking inwardly for solutions in midfield, and this is a chance for Potts. A big cheer when his name is announced.

21:07 , Alex Young

What does Potter change at half-time? What options does he have on the bench?

21:02 , Alex Young

Estevao is the youngest player in Premier League history to assist a goal for Chelsea (at 18 years, 120 days), according to Opta. They appear to have a star in the making.

A smattering of boos greets the half-time whistle. When it rains it pours for West Ham. They conceded three times inside 30 second-half minutes against Sunderland and have shipped three inside 19 minutes here. What does Potter say to his players?

43min: England manager Thomas Tuchel is in the building. Cole Palmer’s injury would not have gone down well.

Sam Tabuteau at London Stadium

Looking around the London Stadium and there's less anger more disbelief. West Ham started so positively and were pressing with intent and creating chances. Where they go from here, though, is anyone's guess.

All that early West Ham optimism has, I hate to say it, burst like a bubble. Chelsea now firmly in charge.

Dom Smith at London Stadium

20:37 , Alex Young

Enzo Fernandez with the finish but it's not that which people will be talking about. Chelsea fans will have loved that Estevao assist.

What a ludicrously impressive burst of pace and then mature decision to pull back across the box. Mountain to climb for West Ham now.

GOAL!

20:35 , Alex Young

Sam Tabuteau at London Stadium

20:26 , Alex Young

West Ham have been really positive, yet they find themselves behind. Paqueta, having opened the scoring, has twice lost out in a 50/50 and now Chelsea are ahead. He's a special player but he has to do more to help his team there.

Dom Smith at London Stadium

20:26 , Alex Young

That's a sumptuous goal by Chelsea, and it puts them ahead for the first time in the match and, indeed, this season.

Joao Pedro's instinctive ball was delightfully curved into the path of Pedro Neto, who did the rest. A superb response - and in double-quick time.

GOAL!

20:24 , Alex Young

23min: This is some game!

Chelsea are in front from Neto, who has it put on a plate by Joao Pedro

Sam Tabuteau at London Stadium

20:21 , Alex Young

It was a well worked move by West Ham, who are up for this game and finding space in behind Chelsea.

Frustrating to see the goal ruled offside, but an encouraging start from the hosts.

Dom Smith at London Stadium

20:20 , Alex Young

Chelsea breathe an almighty sigh of relief but they cannot forget just how poor they defended for that disallowed Fullkrug goal.

They must wake up at the back or they risk West Ham edging ahead again. That Joao Pedro goal was supposed to be a platform, not an anomaly.

NO GOAL

20:20 , Alex Young

18min: Todibo was offside in the build-up.

20:19 , Alex Young

17min: Fullkrug drills home from inside the area... but there is a calls for offside.

Chelsea must recover quickly from this nightmarish start to the match - first losing Palmer to injury and then Lucas Paqueta giving West Ham a shock lead with a blinding goal.

The pressure is right on the visitors now. This match has just got a whole lot harder for them.

GOAL!

20:08 , Alex Young

6min: It’s a stunning start for West Ham as Paqueta beats Sanchez was distance, out of almost nothing!

20:07 , Alex Young

3min: It’s been a confident start from West Ham, perhaps buoyed by the Palmer news.

KICK-OFF!

20:01 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

19:59 , Alex Young

Palmer is on the bench wearing a big coat. That’s such a blow.

19:57 , Alex Young

The players are already in the tunnel. What late drama.

19:56 , Alex Young

Cole Palmer has been ruled OUT of the game!

Estevao starts in his place.

19:52 , Alex Young

Bit of concern over Cole Palmer, who appears to have finished the warm-up early and then went down the tunnel. More when we have it.

19:46 , Alex Young

Enzo Maresca has also been speaking to Sky Sports, speaking about starting both Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

He said: "Joao, as we've said many times, can give us different options. Liam we know, is a central striker, he can play together with Joao as two strikers, or one striker with Joao moving a little bit around or wide.

"We said we'd try to adapt as much as we can to the squad we have and hopefully they can both do well."

19:41 , Alex Young

Graham Potter has been speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game.

He said: "We're in an industry and a club that the demand is you win, that's how it is and any defeat at this level is hard to take but it's also part of the job.

You have to deal with it the best you can, with the right responsibility and I think we've done that. We've been honest with each other and we now have to show we can be better."

West Ham must show some fight on a big night for Potter

19:05 , Alex Young

Graham Potter came out all guns blazing ahead of tonight’s derby between West Ham and Chelsea.

The Hammers manager immediately joked that last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland must have been bad, considering how many journalists were in attendance for his press conference.

He was not wrong, West Ham had been torn apart at the Stadium of Light.

The atmosphere turned prickly at Rush Green on Thursday when that performance and the questions it posed were put to Potter.

Potter was in a defiant mood, keen to emphasise his belief not only in himself but his players.

“I have no doubt whatsoever about my ability,” he Potter ahead of what is a big night for the 50-year-old against his former club Chelsea.

A rallying cry or a sign of straining tension? Either way, it was Potter at his most authentic.

How West Ham could do with some of the fight on display from their manager.

They were insipid against Sunderland, and Chelsea will sense blood as they look for a reaction after last weekend’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace.

Potter needs time to bed in his ideas. West Ham insist they are sympathetic to that, but things will need to improve.

A positive result against Chelsea would change the mood.

One change for West Ham, who bring Soucek into midfield. Some much-needed legs in the centre of the park.

Even at this early stage, this feels like a big game for West Ham and Graham Potter.

Dom Smith at London Stadium

18:48 , Alex Young

That's bold of Maresca to select Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. The man to make way is Jamie Gittens, who I wrote only this morning about needing to step up.

Gittens is on the bench and you'd suspect Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto will play either side of Delap. Estevao is on the bench, as expected.

And Tosin Adarabioyo comes straight back into the team. Understandable, but Josh Acheampong did nothing wrong.

Gittens already under threat at Chelsea as Estevao pushes for start

18:24 , Alex Young

When Jamie Gittens joined Chelsea, he explained in his first interview with the club that one of his reasons for signing was that Enzo Maresca’s system is “built for wingers to attack their full-back and create”.

The 21-year-old knows his arrival at Stamford Bridge following three successful years at Borussia Dortmund represents his 'big move'. It is now time for him to slot in to Chelsea’s system and prove a difference-maker in attack. He must grasp the opportunity.

Gittens made his competitive debut in last Sunday’s Premier League opener: Chelsea’s disappointing goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace.

After 54 minutes in which he completed all of his passes but only two of five attempted dribbles and struggled to make a noticeable impact, he was replaced by the 18-year-old Brazilian star Estevao, similarly right at the start of a potentially long and fruitful Chelsea career.

Estevao had more influence in just over half an hour than Gittens did as a starter, yet Maresca seemed hesitant when asked on Thursday whether Estevao might start against West Ham at the London Stadium on Friday night. Understandably, he looks poised to keep faith with Gittens and start the more experienced youngster again.

Maresca wants strikers to be more clinical

18:18 , Alex Young

Enzo Maresca said improving Chelsea's conversion rate could determine whether they build upon last season's fourth-placed Premier League finish.

The Blues have spent around £160million on attacking players, all of whom played some part in Sunday's lacklustre 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Despite a new look forward line, the difficulty the home side had in breaking down Palace bore hallmarks familiar to supporters who frequently watched their team labour to create and convert opportunities last season.

Chelsea ranked second in last season's Premier League in terms of big chances missed and placed 11th in percentage of shots scored.

Their tally of 64 league goals was beaten by Brighton and Brentford and matched by 17th-place Tottenham, whilst champions Liverpool outscored Maresca's team by 22.

"I don't know if we (now) have more capacity (to score), but for sure if we've made changes it's because we think that with changes we could improve out attacking phase," said Maresca.

"I was quite happy last year in terms goals we scored but with the amount of chances we created, I think we were one of the best in the league."

Potter downbeat on summer window

18:08 , Alex Young

Graham Potter insists a "silver bullet" is not going to save West Ham during the transfer window.

The Hammers' 3-0 opening-day defeat by Sunderland highlighted the shortcomings in Potter's squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

Potter has brought in Kyle Walker-Peters, Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Callum Wilson while the club are being linked with Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

But Potter insisted: "The squad has had investment over a number of years and we have to get more out of the squad we have.

"We're also looking to improve as a club and we'll look to find a solution.

"When you have had a bad result everyone thinks a silver bullet's going to come from outside and save us all. History would suggest it doesn't work like that."

Score prediction

17:56 , Alex Young

Chelsea couldn’t have asked for a better fixture to secure their first win of the season. Maresca will want to show fans they’re a serious outfit and that the discourse regarding their progress is true.

With the attacking talent at their disposal, expect Chelsea to be on the front foot and create chances and score goals.

Potter's side looks bereft of ideas at the moment. They seemingly have come into the season without being fully prepared and were punished against Sunderland.

Expect more of the same from this game, as many are tipping The Hammers to go down this season.

Chelsea to win, 3-1.

Early Chelsea team news

17:49 , Alex Young

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca can choose between Josh Acheampong, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana as he mulls over who to start alongside Trevoh Chalobah tonight.

Chelsea lost key starter Levi Colwill when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training and were set to pair Tosin with Chalobah against Palace until the former did not complete training on Saturday.

That led Maresca to play 19-year-old Acheampong, who could start again given he impressed against Palace.

However, Maresca explained in his press conference on Thursday that Fofana could get minutes against West Ham and that Tosin, who returned to training on Wednesday, is also available.

Maresca must decide whether he selects Joao Pedro or Liam Delap, his two new forwards, up front.

Early West Ham team news

17:42 , Alex Young

West Ham will be without Edson Alvarez, who is close to joining Fenerbahce.

Crysencio Summerville is nearing a return from a long-term hamstring problem, but this game may come prematurely.

Despite conceding three goals on his debut, expect Mads Hermansen to keep Alphonse Areola out and continue between the sticks.
