West Ham's pursuit of Kurt Zouma is set to end in failure following the wage demands of the France international.
The Hammers and Chelsea are understood to have come to a consensus on a fee for the Champions League winner, however, the defender was not able to come to an agreement over his salary and rejected West Ham's offer.
With a deal for Zouma looking dead in the water, the Hammers are set to return to previous targets Nikola Milenkovic of Firotentina and Marseille's Duje Caleta-Car.
West Ham are set to face tough competition for MIlenkovic with Italian giants Juventus also keen on the Serbian international.
Valued at just £14million due to having less than a year left on his contract, Milenkovic is a cheaper option to Caleta-Car but with Juventus in the hunt and the Serbian understood to be keen to stay in Italy, a deal will be far from easy to complete.
Croatian Caleta-Car is valued in the region of £20m and is open to a move to the Premier League. The Marseille defender is an experienced international having represented his country at both the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 and, at 24, is the ideal age for manager David Moyes' requirements.
According to reports in the Croatian press, West Ham are not the only English side interested in the defender with Tottenham also in the market for defensive reinforcements.
Sportklub have reported that Spurs have agreed personal terms with Caleta-Car and all that remains is for the two teams to finalise the details.
However, until Caleta-Car puts pen to paper at Spurs, West Ham still have a chance to swoop in and beat their rivals to the punch.
