West Ham are close to selling Pedro Obiang to Sassuolo in an £8million deal which will generate extra transfer funds for Manuel Pellegrini.
The Hammers hope to offload Obiang and the midfielder is expected to seal a return to Serie A this week.
His departure would increase the transfer budget at West Ham, with Pellegrini keen to strengthen his squad further ahead of the new season.
Pellegrini wants to bring in another striker following the £45million club-record transfer of Sebastien Haller, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
West Ham may consider signing a replacement for Obiang, but they already have Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez so are well-stocked with central midfielders. Reece Oxford is also expected to leave West Ham this summer.
Obiang, who was born in Spain but is an Equatorial Guinea international, is due to have a medical at Sassuolo this week and the 27-year-old will return to Italy four years after he joined West Ham from Sampdoria for around £4m.
In total, Obiang made 116 appearances for West Ham. He scored three goals for the Hammers, including a spectacular long-range strike against Tottenham in a 1-1 draw at Wembley two seasons ago.
West Ham hope to offload striker Jordan Hugill but his wage demands have delayed a move to the Championship.
Bristol City are among the teams interested in the 27-year-old, who joined from Preston for £10m last January but has made just three substitute appearances for the Hammers and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
