West Ham transfer blow as Shane Duffy joins Celtic on loan

West Ham have missed out on the signing of Brighton's Shane Duffy after the defender completed a season-long loan to Scottish champions Celtic.

The Irons had been keen on the 28-year-old, who started his career under manager David Moyes at Everton, as they look to bolster the back line. Duffy, however, had his heart set on a move north of the boarder.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon said: "This is a real coup for the club. From the off, Shane wanted to come to Celtic and we are delighted we have been able to fend off English Premier League interest."

Moyes is desperate to add some experience to his defence ahead of the new season, but is restricted in what he can afford by huge spending in previous summers.

Speaking exclusively to Standard Sport last month, Moyes said: "We’re lacking in defensive cover. We’re also looking to see who could move on, because that could change the direction we take during the transfer window.

“The owners have spent a lot of money in the last few years and I’m not sure a similar amount will be available this time. Whatever there is, though, we will spend it wisely.

“We’re trying to bring in a younger group but we will also need a couple of experienced players. Central defenders are usually better when they’re more experienced.”
