West Ham have signed highly rated young defender Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista in a deal worth £2.75million.
The 18-year-old Portuguese centre-back joins on a five-year contract with an option of a further year.
“I am very excited and it’s a dream come true," said Cardoso, who will wear the No.20 shirt. “I always dreamt of coming to England and now I’m here at this big, historic club, so I’m very happy.
“I’m an aggressive player, a little bit different on the pitch than off it. I’m calm, and I like to have the ball and build the game from the back. I’m here to work and to help the team reach their goals.
”The Hammers made a new centre-back a priority before Thursday’s transfer deadline and have snapped up the 18-year-old following an impressive summer.
Cardoso starred for Portugal as they reached the final of the European Under-19 Championship this summer. He made 15 senior appearances for Boavista in the Portuguese league and will provide cover for Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena.
West Ham have been keen to strengthen their defence before the new season and Cardoso has become their fifth summer signing.
Manuel Pellegrini will now look to signing another striker this week, with £8m-rated Albian Ajeti a target.
